The Psalter (First Set of Propers)

Psalm 145

The One Hundred Forty Fifth Psalm

Exaltabo te, Deus.

I WILL magnify thee, O God, my King; * and I will praise thy Name for ever and ever.
Every day will I give thanks unto thee; * and praise thy Name for ever and ever.
Great is the LORD, and marvellous worthy to be praised; * there is no end of his greatness.
One generation shall praise thy works unto another, * and declare thy power.
As for me, I will be talking of thy worship, * thy glory, thy praise, and wondrous works;
So that men shall speak of the might of thy marvellous acts; * and I will also tell of thy greatness.
The memorial of thine abundant kindness shall be showed; * and men shall sing of thy righteousness.
The LORD is gracious and merciful; * long-suffering, and of great goodness.
The LORD is loving unto every man; * and his mercy is over all his works.
All thy works praise thee, O LORD; * and thy saints give thanks unto thee.
They show the glory of thy kingdom, * and talk of thy power;
That thy power, thy glory, and mightiness of thy kingdom, * might be known unto men.
Thy kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, * and thy dominion endureth throughout all ages.
The LORD upholdeth all such as fall, * and lifteth up all those that are down.
The eyes of all wait upon thee, O Lord; * and thou givest them their meat in due season.
Thou openest thine hand, * and fillest all things living with plenteousness.
The LORD is righteous in all his ways, * and holy in all his works.
The LORD is nigh unto all them that call upon him; * yea, all such as call upon him faithfully.
He will fulfil the desire of them that fear him; * he also will hear their cry, and will help them.
The LORD preserveth all them that love him; * but scattereth abroad all the ungodly.
My mouth shall speak the praise of the LORD; * and let all flesh give thanks unto his holy Name for ever and ever.

The Psalter (Second Set of Propers)

Psalm 16

The Sixteenth Psalm

Conserva me, Domine.

PRESERVE me, O God; * for in thee have I put my trust.
O my soul, thou hast said unto the LORD, * Thou art my God; I have no good like unto thee.
All my delight is upon the saints that are in the earth, * and upon such as excel in virtue.
But they that run after another god * shall have great trouble.
Their drink-offerings of blood will I not offer, * neither make mention of their names within my lips.
The LORD himself is the portion of mine inheritance, and of my cup; * thou shalt maintain my lot.
The lot is fallen unto me in a fair ground; * yea, I have a goodly heritage.
I will thank the LORD for giving me warning; * my reins also chasten me in the night season.
I have set the LORD alway before me; * for he is on my right hand, therefore I shall not fall.
Wherefore my heart is glad, and my glory rejoiceth: * my flesh also shall rest in hope.
For why? thou shalt not leave my soul in hell; * neither shalt thou suffer thy Holy One to see corruption.
Thou shalt show me the path of life: in thy presence is the fulness of joy, * and at thy right hand there is pleasure for evermore.

Psalm 100

The One Hundredth Psalm

Jubilate Deo.

O BE joyful in the LORD, all ye lands: * serve the LORD with gladness, and come before his presence with a song.
Be ye sure that the LORD he is God; it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves; * we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.
O go your way into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise; * be thankful unto him, and speak good of his Name.
For the LORD is gracious, his mercy is everlasting; * and his truth endureth from generation to generation.

The First Lesson (First Set of Propers)

Ezekiel 34:11-16, 30-31

For thus saith the Lord God; Behold, I, even I, will both search my sheep, and seek them out. As a shepherd seeketh out his flock in the day that he is among his sheep that are scattered; so will I seek out my sheep, and will deliver them out of all places where they have been scattered in the cloudy and dark day. And I will bring them out from the people, and gather them from the countries, and will bring them to their own land, and feed them upon the mountains of Israel by the rivers, and in all the inhabited places of the country. I will feed them in a good pasture, and upon the high mountains of Israel shall their fold be: there shall they lie in a good fold, and in a fat pasture shall they feed upon the mountains of Israel. I will feed my flock, and I will cause them to lie down, saith the Lord God. I will seek that which was lost, and bring again that which was driven away, and will bind up that which was broken, and will strengthen that which was sick: but I will destroy the fat and the strong; I will feed them with judgment. Thus shall they know that I the Lord their God am with them, and that they, even the house of Israel, are my people, saith the Lord God. And ye my flock, the flock of my pasture, are men, and I am your God, saith the Lord God.

The First Lesson (Second Set of Propers)

II Esdras 8:20-30, 46, 51-54

O Lord, thou that dwellest in everlastingness which beholdest from above things in the heaven and in the air; Whose throne is inestimable; whose glory may not be comprehended; before whom the hosts of angels stand with trembling, Whose service is conversant in wind and fire; whose word is true, and sayings constant; whose commandment is strong, and ordinance fearful; Whose look drieth up the depths, and indignation maketh the mountains to melt away; which the truth witnesseth: O hear the prayer of thy servant, and give ear to the petition of thy creature. For while I live I will speak, and so long as I have understanding I will answer. O look not upon the sins of thy people; but on them which serve thee in truth. Regard not the wicked inventions of the heathen, but the desire of those that keep thy testimonies in afflictions. Think not upon those that have walked feignedly before thee: but remember them, which according to thy will have known thy fear. Let it not be thy will to destroy them which have lived like beasts; but to look upon them that have clearly taught thy law. Take thou no indignation at them which are deemed worse than beasts; but love them that always put their trust in thy righteousness and glory. Then answered he me, and said, Things present are for the present, and things to cometh for such as be to come. But understand thou for thyself, and seek out the glory for such as be like thee. For unto you is paradise opened, the tree of life is planted, the time to come is prepared, plenteousness is made ready, a city is builded, and rest is allowed, yea, perfect goodness and wisdom. The root of evil is sealed up from you, weakness and the moth is hid from you, and corruption is fled into hell to be forgotten: Sorrows are passed, and in the end is shewed the treasure of immortality.

The Second Lesson (First Set of Propers)

St. John 21:1-19

After these things Jesus shewed himself again to the disciples at the sea of Tiberias; and on this wise shewed he himself. There were together Simon Peter, and Thomas called Didymus, and Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, and the sons of Zebedee, and two othe r of his disciples. Simon Peter saith unto them, I go a fishing. They say unto him, We also go with thee. They went forth, and entered into a ship immediately; and that night they caught nothing. But when the morning was now come, Jesus stood on the sho re: but the disciples knew not that it was Jesus. Then Jesus saith unto them, Children, have ye any meat? They answered him, No. And he said unto them, Cast the net on the right side of the ship, and ye shall find. They cast therefore, and now they were not able to draw it for the multitude of fishes. Therefore that disciple whom Jesus loved saith unto Peter, It is the Lord. Now when Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he girt his fisher's coat unto him, (for he was naked,) and did cast himself int o the sea. And the other disciples came in a little ship; (for they were not far from land, but as it were two hundred cubits,) dragging the net with fishes. As soon then as they were come to land, they saw a fire of coals there, and fish laid thereon, and bread. Jesus saith unto them, Bring of the fish which ye have now caught. Simon Peter went up, and drew the net to land full of great fishes, and hundred and fifty and three: and for all there were so many, yet was not the net broken. Jesus saith unto them, Come and dine. And none of the disciples durst ask him, Who art thou? knowing that it was the Lord. Jesus then cometh, and taketh bread, and giveth them, and fish likewise. This is now the third time that Jesus shewed himself to his disciples , after that he was risen from the dead. So when they had dined, Jesus saith to Simon Peter, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me more than these? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, Feed my lambs. He saith to him again the second time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, Feed my sheep. He saith unto him the third time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me? Peter was grieved becaus e he said unto him the third time, Lovest thou me? And he said unto him, Lord, thou knowest all things; thou knowest that I love thee. Jesus saith unto him, Feed my sheep. Verily, verily, I say unto thee, When thou wast young, thou girdedst thyself, and walkedst whither thou wouldest: but when thou shalt be old, thou shalt stretch forth thy hands, and another shall gird thee, and carry thee whither thou wouldest not. This spake he, signifying by what death he should glorify God. And when he had spoken t his, he saith unto him, Follow me.

The Second Lesson (Second Set of Propers)

I Corinthians 15:12-23

Now if Christ be preached that he rose from the dead, how say some among you that there is no resurrection of the dead? But if there be no resurrection of the dead, then is Christ not risen: And if Christ be not risen, then is our preaching vain, and your faith is also vain. Yea, and we are found false witnesses of God; because we have testified of God that he raised up Christ: whom he raised not up, if so be that the dead rise not. For if the dead rise not, then is not Christ raised: And if Christ be not raised, your faith is vain; ye are yet in your sins. Then they also which are fallen asleep in Christ are perished. If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men most miserable. But now is Christ risen from the dead, and become the firstfruits of them that slept. For since by man came death, by man came also the resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive. But every man in his own order: Christ the firstfruits; afterward they that are Christ's at his coming.

The Collect

The Second Sunday After Easter

ALMIGHTY God, who hast given thine only Son to be unto us both a sacrifice for sin, and also an ensample of godly life; Give us grace that we may always most thankfully receive that his inestimable benefit, and also daily endeavour ourselves to follow the blessed steps of his most holy life; through the same thy Son Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
