The Psalter

Psalm 22

The Twenty-Second Psalm

Deus, deus meus.

MY God, my God, look upon me; why hast thou forsaken me? * and art so far from my health, and from the words of my complaint?
O my God, I cry in the day-time, but thou hearest not; * and in the night season also I take no rest.
And thou continuest holy, * O thou Worship of Israel.
Our fathers hoped in thee; * they trusted in thee, and thou didst deliver them.
They called upon thee, and were holpen; * they put their trust in thee, and were not confounded.
But as for me, I am a worm, and no man; * a very scorn of men, and the outcast of the people.
All they that see me laugh me to scorn; * they shoot out their lips, and shake their heads, saying,
He trusted in the LORD, that he would deliver him; * let him deliver him, if he will have him.
But thou art he that took me out of my mother's womb; * thou wast my hope, when I hanged yet upon my mother's breasts.
I have been left unto thee ever since I was born; * thou art my God even from my mother's womb.
O go not from me; for trouble is hard at hand, * and there is none to help me.
Many oxen are come about me; * fat bulls of Bashan close me in on every side.
They gape upon me with their mouths, * as it were a ramping and a roaring lion.
I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint; * my heart also in the midst of my body is even like melting wax.
My strength is dried up like a potsherd, and my tongue cleaveth to my gums, * and thou bringest me into the dust of death.
For many dogs are come about me, * and the council of the wicked layeth siege against me.
They pierced my hands and my feet: I may tell all my bones: * they stand staring and looking upon me.
They part my garments among them, * and cast lots upon my vesture.
But be not thou far from me, O LORD; * thou art my succour, haste thee to help me.

vs 21 Deliver my soul from the sword, * my darling from the power of the dog.
Save me from the lion's mouth; * thou hast heard me also from among the horns of the unicorns.
I will declare thy Name unto my brethren; * in the midst of the congregation will I praise thee.

vs 23 O praise the LORD, ye that fear him: * magnify him, all ye of the seed of Jacob; and fear him, all ye seed of Israel.
For he hath not despised nor abhorred the low estate of the poor; * he hath not hid his face from him; but when he called unto him he heard him.
My praise is of thee in the great congregation; * my vows will I perform in the sight of them that fear him.
The poor shall eat, and be satisfied; they that seek after the LORD shall praise him: * your heart shall live for ever.
All the ends of the world shall remember themselves, and be turned unto the LORD; * and all the kindreds of the nations shall worship before him.
For the kingdom is the LORD'S, * and he is the Governor among the nations.
All such as be fat upon earth * have eaten, and worshipped.
All they that go down into the dust shall kneel before him; * and no man hath quickened his own soul.
My seed shall serve him: * they shall be counted unto the Lord for a generation.
They shall come, and shall declare his righteousness * unto a people that shall be born, whom the Lord hath made.

The First Lesson

Job 11:7

Canst thou by searching find out God? canst thou find out the Almighty unto perfection? It is as high as heaven; what canst thou do? deeper than hell; what canst thou know? The measure thereof is longer than the earth, and broader than the sea. If he cut off, and shut up, or gather together, then who can hinder him? For he knoweth vain men: he seeth wickedness also; will he not then consider it? For vain man would be wise, though man be born like a wild ass's colt. If thou prepare thine heart, and stretch out thine hands toward him; If iniquity be in thine hand, put it far away, and let not wickedness dwell in thy tabernacles. For then shalt thou lift up thy face without spot; yea, thou shalt be stedfast, and shalt not fear: Because thou shalt forget thy misery, and remember it as waters that pass away: And thine age shall be clearer than the noonday; thou shalt shine forth, thou shalt be as the morning. And thou shalt be secure, because there is hope; yea, thou shalt dig about thee, and thou shalt take thy rest in safety. Also thou shalt lie down, and none shall make thee afraid; yea, many shall make suit unto thee. But the eyes of the wicked shall fail, and they shall not escape, and their hope shall be as the giving up of the ghost.

The Second Lesson

St. Matthew 13:24-30,36-43

Another parable put he forth unto them, saying, The kingdom of heaven is likened unto a man which sowed good seed in his field: But while men slept, his enemy came and sowed tares among the wheat, and went his way. But when the blade was sprung up, and brought forth fruit, then appeared the tares also. So the servants of the householder came and said unto him, Sir, didst not thou sow good seed in thy field? from whence then hath it tares? He said unto them, An enemy hath done this. The servants said unto him, Wilt thou then that we go and gather them up? But he said, Nay; lest while ye gather up the tares, ye root up also the wheat with them. Let both grow together until the harvest: and in the time of harvest I will say to the reapers, Gather ye together first the tares, and bind them in bundles to burn them: but gather the wheat into my barn. Then Jesus sent the multitude away, and went into the house: and his disciples came unto him, saying, Declare unto us the parable of the tares of the field. He answered and said unto them, He that soweth the good seed is the Son of man; The field is the world; the good seed are the children of the kingdom; but the tares are the children of the wicked one; The enemy that sowed them is the devil; the harvest is the end of the world; and the reapers are the angels. As therefore the tares are gathered and burned in the fire; so shall it be in the end of this world. The Son of man shall send forth his angels, and they shall gather out of his kingdom all things that offend, and them which do iniquity; And shall cast them into a furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth. Then shall the righteous shine forth as the sun in the kingdom of their Father. Who hath ears to hear, let him hear.
