Sentences of Scripture.
Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my
heart, be alway acceptable in thy sight, O LORD, my
strength and my redeemer. Psalm xix. 14.
The hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers
shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the
Father seeketh such to worship him. St. John iv. 23.

O COME, let us sing unto the LORD; * let us heartily
rejoice in the strength of our salvation.
Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving; * and
show ourselves glad in him with psalms.
For the LORD is a great God; * and a great King
above all gods.
In his hand are all the corners of the earth; * and the
strength of the hills is his also.
The sea is his, and he made it; * and his hands
prepared the dry land.
O come, let us worship and fall down, * and kneel
before the LORD our Maker.
For he is the Lord our God; * and we are the people

O worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness; * let

The First Psalm
Beatus vir qui non abiit.
BLESSED is the man that hath not walked in the
counsel of the ungodly, nor stood in the way of sinners,
* and hath not sat in the seat of the scornful.
But his delight is in the law of the LORD;
* and in his law will he exercise himself day and night.
And he shall be like a tree planted by the water-side,
* that will bring forth his fruit in due season.
His leaf also shall not wither;
* and look, whatsoever he doeth, it shall prosper.
As for the ungodly, it is not so with them;
* but they are like the chaff, which the wind scattereth
away from the face of the earth.
Therefore the ungodly shall not be able to stand
in the judgment,
* neither the sinners in the congregation of the righteous.
But the LORD knoweth the way of the righteous;
* and the way of the ungodly shall perish.

The Third Psalm
Domine, quid multiplicati?
LORD, how are they increased that trouble me!
* many are they that rise against me.
Many one there be that say of my soul,
* There is no help for him in his God.
But thou, O LORD, art my defender;
* thou art my worship, and the lifter up of my head.
I did call upon the LORD with my voice,
* and he heard me out of his holy hill.
I laid me down and slept, and rose up again;
* for the LORD sustained me.
I will not be afraid for ten thousands of the people;
* that have set themselves against me round about.
Up, LORD, and help me, O my God,
* for thou smitest all mine enemies upon the cheek-bone;

Salvation belongeth unto the LORD;

The First Lesson
Isaiah 1:1-9
The vision of Isaiah the son of Amoz, which he saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem in the days of
Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah, kings of Judah. Hear, O heavens, and give ear, O earth: for the Lord
hath spoken, I have nourished and brought up children, and they have rebelled against me. The ox knoweth
his owner, and the ass his master's crib: but Israel doth not know, my people doth not consider. Ah sinful
nation, a people laden with iniquity, a seed of evildoers, children that are corrupters: they have forsaken the
Lord, they have provoked the Holy One of Israel unto anger, they are gone away backward. Why should ye
be stricken any more? ye will revolt more and more: the whole head is sick, and the whole heart faint. From
the sole of the foot even unto the head there is no soundness in it; but wounds, and bruises, and putrefying
sores: they have not been closed, neither bound up, neither mollified with ointment. Your country is
desolate, your cities are burned with fire: your land, strangers devour it in your presence, and it is desolate,
as overthrown by strangers. And the daughter of Zion is left as a cottage in a vineyard, as a lodge in a
garden of cucumbers, as a besieged city. Except the Lord of hosts had left unto us a very small remnant, we
should have been as Sodom, and we should have been like unto Gomorrah.

The Second Lesson
St. Mark 1:1-13
The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God; As it is written in the prophets, Behold, I
send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee. The voice of one crying in the
wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight. John did baptize in the wilderness, and
preach the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins. And there went out unto him all the land of
Judaea, and they of Jerusalem, and were all baptized of him in the river of Jordan, confessing their sins. And
John was clothed with camel's hair, and with a girdle of a skin about his loins; and he did eat locusts and wild
honey; And preached, saying, There cometh one mightier than I after me, the latchet of whose shoes I am
not worthy to stoop down and unloose. I indeed have baptized you with water: but he shall baptize you
with the Holy Ghost. And it came to pass in those days, that Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee, and was
baptized of John in Jordan. And straightway coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens opened, and
the Spirit like a dove descending upon him: And there came a voice from heaven, saying, Thou art my
beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. And immediately the Spirit driveth him into the wilderness. And
he was there in the wilderness forty days, tempted of Satan; and was with the wild beasts; and the angels
ministered unto him.
Benedictus. St. Luke i. 68.
BLESSED be the Lord God of Israel; * for he hath visited and
redeemed his people;
And hath raised up a mighty salvation for us, * in the
house of his servant David;
As he spake by the mouth of his holy Prophets, * which
have been since the world began;
That we should be saved from our enemies, * and from
the hand of all that hate us.
To perform the mercy promised to our forefathers, * and
to remember his holy covenant;
To perform the oath which he sware to our forefather
Abraham, * that he would give us;
That we being delivered out of the hand of our enemies *
might serve him without fear;
In holiness and righteousness before him, * all the days
of our life.
And thou, child, shalt be called the prophet of the Highest: * for
thou shalt go before the face of the Lord to prepare his ways;
To give knowledge of salvation unto his people * for the

Through the tender mercy of our God; * whereby the
day-spring from on high hath visited us;

shadow of death, * and to guide our feet into the way of
peace.

The Apostles' Creed.
I BELIEVE in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth:
And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord: Who was conceived by the Holy
Ghost, Born of the Virgin Mary: Suffered under Pontius Pilate, Was
crucified, dead, and buried: He descended into hell; The third day he
rose again from the dead: He ascended into heaven, And sitteth on the
right hand of God the Father Almighty: From thence he shall come to judge
the quick and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Ghost: The holy Catholic Church; The Communion of
Saints: The Forgiveness of sins: The Resurrection of the body: And the
Life everlasting. Amen.

The Lord's Prayer.
OUR Father, who art in heaven, Hallowed be thy Name. Thy kingdom come.
Thy will be done, On earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our
daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, As we forgive those who
trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, But deliver us
from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for
ever and ever. Amen.
Minister. O Lord, show thy mercy upon us.
Answer. And grant us thy salvation.
Minister. O God, make clean our hearts within us.
Answer. And take not thy Holy Spirit from us.
The Collect for the Day
The First Sunday in Advent
ALMIGHTY God, give us grace that we may cast away the works of darkness, and put upon us the
armour of light, now in the time of this mortal life, in which thy Son Jesus Christ came to visit us in great
humility; that in the last day, when he shall come again in his glorious majesty to judge both the quick
and the dead, we may rise to the life immortal, through him who liveth and reigneth with thee and the
Holy Ghost, now and ever. Amen.
A Collect for Peace.
O GOD, who art the author of peace and lover of concord,
in knowledge of whom standeth our eternal life, whose service
is perfect freedom; Defend us thy humble servants in all assaults
of our enemies; that we, surely trusting in thy defence, may not
fear the power of any adversaries, through the might of Jesus Christ
our Lord. Amen.
A Collect for Grace.
O Lord, our heavenly Father, Almighty and everlasting God,
who hast safely brought us to the beginning of this day; Defend
us in the same with thy mighty power; and grant that this day
we fall into no sin, neither run into any kind of danger; but
that all our doings, being ordered by thy governance, may be
righteous in thy sight; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
A Prayer for the President of the United States
A Prayer for the Clergy and People.
Almighty and everlasting God, from whom cometh every good and perfect
gift; Send down upon our Bishops, and other Clergy, and upon the
Congregations committed to their charge, the healthful Spirit of thy
grace; and, that they may truly please thee, pour upon them the continual
dew of thy blessing. Grant this, O Lord, for the honour of our Advocate
and Mediator, Jesus Christ. Amen.
A Prayer for All Conditions of Men.
O God, the Creator and Preserver of all mankind, we humbly beseech thee
for all sorts and conditions of men; that thou wouldest be pleased to
make thy ways known unto them, thy saving health unto all nations. More
especially we pray for thy holy Church universal; that it may be so
guided and governed by thy good Spirit, that all who profess and call
themselves Christians may be led into the way of truth, and hold the
faith in unity of spirit, in the bond of peace, and in righteousness of
life. Finally, we commend to thy fatherly goodness all those who are any
ways afflicted, or distressed, in mind, body, or estate; [* especially
those for whom our prayers are desired;] that it may please thee to
comfort and relieve them, according to their several necessities; giving
them patience under their sufferings, and a happy issue out of all their
afflictions. And this we beg for Jesus Christ's sake. Amen.
A General Thanksgiving
A Prayer of St. Chrysostom

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the
fellowship of the Holy Ghost, be with us all evermore. Amen.
